Hello Oppo! I come to you seeking mechanical advice regarding an '04 Mazda Tribute (AKA a Ford Escape. My cousin drives one and she texted me this: "I turned my car on this morning and it made a loud, ear-piercing sound that could be heard throughout the development and I decided it was not drivable." I'm thinking maybe her alternator belt slipped but i'm not sure. Any ideas?

A belt would be my first thing to look for and next a water pump.

Our Tribbie has 100,000+ miles. I've replaced many things that have made horrible sounds (tie rod ends, control arms, etc.). But I've never heard ours make a loud shrieking sound.
